Random.. very random

I've been talking to a friend about our handmade products and she highlighted about this one issue : stealing other people idea to create and sell.

My own opinion, essential thing like baju, food, in fact home decor tak de istilah curi idea sebab its actually come from our basic need and how we want it to ease our life. Barang handmade pon tak bole dikategorikan istilah mencuri harta intelek sebab its still one creation which he/she made it with his/her effort unless kalo nak go commercialize then this you have to come out with your own branding. I know at the same time, we have to jaga hak orang but sometimes if we have the source and capability to create the same why not we come out with that product and AND AND sell it with an affordable price. In economic terms selling same product in different price can disown that monopoly.

And talking bout monopoly, the basic example is our TV cable - the one and only Astro. They're making lotsa profit ever since and yet did they honor us as their customer? No, I bravely said that. Why, because if you forgotten to pay the monthly bill and they barred your service, you need to pay rm20 to reconnect and even if don't like to subscribe anymore, you wanna terminate and did not return the smartcard: You'll be penalized for rm80. Giler kan!!! I talked about my dissatisfaction to my husband and he said that this is how a monopoly company doing their business. They want to make profit and they view not only they can make profit from potential customers but also towards the existence subscribers. Other word of this is capitalism.

So, I think when one mother wants to make something out from her two hands like red velvet cupcakes, we as the community have to give support instead being a jerk by slamming that one mother is trying to copy other people ideas. This wahm community in Malaysia is small so we need to help each other. And if we want to give a negative feedback, please do it personally rather than saying it openly. Negative feedback hurts but somehow for me as a carrier maker, I need that honest feedback in order to improve my creation.

But then again, even if you wanna do something similar with your 'idol', please make sure you own creation must have your own trademark. Jangan la tiru 100% sampai 'your idol' jadi pening kepala la plak to come out with other ideas to make it different from the one that you've copied at the first place. And that remind me to link to what Kak Millie wrote in her blog regarding copy-cats here.

Ok, readers. Happy Monday :)

  1. in crafting nii rasanya kita tiru n org tiru kita... and it keep in on n on.. kalaulah takde org jual/jahit tudung yg imitate tudung ariani, maybe kita ni sampai bila pon tak mampu pakai tudung ala ala ariani kut hahaha...the other option is, jgn publish ur product anywhere, sure no one will inspired with it. akak ni senang jer, kalau someone inpired by my so called creation n make money with it, alhamdulillah, ada jugak share kat akhirat nnt hahaha..
but plagiat mmg tak boleh dimaafkanlah.. tak pernah kena, tp boleh memahami perasaan tuan punya tuh.

  3. Great notes here. I agree with most that you write. In creafting business especially sewing, unless you can say that you invented sewing, then you can never claim you own any dress/hats/meitai design as your 100% original. But total copy down to the detail with intention to compete is not healthy. This is a monopolistic competitive market we are in i.e anybody can join and compete and copy what we do because there is no barrier to entry. Super profit is impossible. So the only way a seller can survive is if she keeps innovating and creating things that is very difficult to copy. Having said all that, I still believe in community role in selling crafts (custome sewn) item the main concern is NO undercutting or competing by lowering the price. This strategy is very damaging not just for the sellers but it will surely kill the industry in the long run. Not sustainable at all. Let us all keep the good name of custom made item in the premium category and not downgrade our products. Just my two cents. Go Neeza!

  6. Kak Mila, sy setuju apa kak Mila tulis. Imitation sometimes penting to cater those yg kurang berkemampuan. Payah la hidup kalo nk authentic jer.. sampai bila-bila la org tak mampu tak merasa..

Zura, super profit absolutely impossible but underestimated price plak mmg akan rugi both company, the seller of course and the customer too (sbb brg mebe limited so hanya yg dapat saja dapat..).. And me too agree what u said Zura-- ini org ada Master in Business ni, jgn main-main.. hehehe.. kidding ;)

  7. Neeza, I always believe there's a difference between "inspired" and plain copying. Or plagiarizing. I dulu2 pun selalu tgk M.Stewart, dpt idea..tgk katalog kompeni hamper (yg besar2), dpt idea. Tapi tak tiru 100%. I have many friends doing gift baskets also & am very good terms with them. Sharing2 jobs pulak tu kdg2. Tapi kalau ambik brg kita & claim as her own, memang tak patut la kan. Pastu depan kita buat selambaaa je like nothing happened hu huu..
    All the best Neeza !
